BTC kit orders - catalogue and price list

Vo2 sportswear will send the next order for club kit to the manufacturers in early Feb 2016. Lisa will compile the orders. Contact her at kit@boltontri.com. Here is the catalogue and pricelist and sizing chart  The sizing is on the small side so it is best to try on first at the Vo2 shop at Total Fitness, Waters Meeting Road in Bolton or to try on someone else's kit for size. Don't go by the sizing chart for juniors, it is way out for some reason. Stuart has some samples of junior trisuits that can be tried on.

Bolton Juniors Team wins the NW Club Champs

It's official! Bolton Tri Club Juniors came first in both the Boys and Girls NW Club Championships.
We had a great turnout from our juniors, some doing a triathlon for the first time, and it meant we had competitors in every age group contributing to our overall score.
See the team results here. Each athlete gave their best and they were a great credit to the club. Thanks should also go to the parents and coaches without whom this wouldn't have happened.

The Bolton News - Junior Aquathon event

Akik and Heath are top Bolton Tri Club finishers in home Junior Aquathon event

WELL PLACED: Adam Akik came fifth in the T3 event

http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/13489044.Akin_and_Heath_are_top_Bolton_Tri_Club_finishers_in_home_Junior_Aquathon_event/

A TOTAL of 210 athletes took part in Bolton Triathlon Club's annual Junior Aquathon at Westhoughton Leisure Centre.

The Tristar races, for juniors aged nine to 10 (Tristar 1), 11 to 12 (Tristar 2) and 13 to 14 (Tristar 3) were the most keenly contested as they formed part of the North West triathlon junior series.

Around 20 boys and girls from the North West competed in each race. Georgia Heath, in T2, and Adam Akik, in T3, were Bolton's highest-placed finishers in those events, both coming home in fifth.

Georgia was four seconds behind team-mate Alicia Aldred after the 250m swim but was 19 seconds faster on the 1800m run to finish in 12mins 39secs. Alicia finished eight.

Bolton Triathlon Club had eight of the 18 competitors in T3.
Adam Akik was well clear of his team mates in fifth, while George Walton, Rhys Whelan and Ben Clarke-Davison finished 11th, 12th and 13th respectively.

Bolton Tri Club had four out of the nine competitors in the longest events, the Junior and Youth race for 15 to 18-years-olds which was a 500m swim and 3.6 run. Sam Brooks, Ben Sykes, George Butler and Nina Carter all showed great stamina.

Matthew Russell and Callum Crosby from Bolton Tri Club both came first in their age categories in the Supersprint distance which is a 50m swim and 600m run.

Emily Russell and Sam Atherton came second and third in their age groups in the 150m swim, 1200m run sprint distance.
The parents had a much shorter race, 150m swim and 1200m run.
Bolton Tri Club mums took all the honours with Christine Holden, Rosalyn Dines and Ann Butler finishing first, second and third.

Irwell Valley Trail bike ride on Monday 25th May evening instead of Leverhulme session

No junior session at Leverhulme Park on Mon 25th May

Instead: Organised bike ride along Irwell Valley Cycling Trail

As it is a bank holiday  there will be no session at Leverhulme Park on Monday.

Instead coaches will lead a bike ride along the Irwell Valley Cyclng Trail from Radcliffe to Agecroft and back. This ride is entirely off road and suitable for any kind of bike with good surfaces and some tarmac stretches. Parents are welcome as are any adult members

The ride is suitable for most juniors but we would prefer it if those aged 10 and under were accompanied by parents as there will be times when children are out of the sight of a coach or adult

The total distance is about 12 miles but as we will be riding out and back those that want to do less can turn back before Agecroft.

Bring your own bike and helmet.

Meet at 7pm at Sion Street Radcliffe

Opposite St John’s Ambulance (but please don’t use their car park)

Just off the roundabout near ASDA,   M26 3SB

Finish 8.30 pm  approx.

If we finish earlier we will wait with any juniors waiting to be picked up.

More info contact Stuart Carter 07523722211 or chairman@boltontri.com

Open Water swimming Directions: it starts on Tuesday

We are starting Tue 19th May at Elton reservoir and you can swim any time between 5 and 8pm. You must have a wetsuit and brightly coloured swim hat and be able to swim 500m continuously. Water temp is 12 to 13 degrees so it is not warm up enough yet for under 16s if they are new to open water. The reservoir looks beautiful though with swifts and swallows swooping over the water

Directions to Elton Sailing Club.
If travelling down Bolton Road (A58) towards Bury turn right at Wellington Pub into Kitchener Street, signposted Elton Reservoir and Alpha Hospital.
At end of Kitchener St turn right into Buller Street. Turn left over a smalll bridge signposted Alpha Hospital. Once over bridge bear right and down lane to Sailing Club.
...
Don’t rely on a sat nav, it may take you towards the reservoir from the wrong side along a lane which has a locked barrier

3hr Turbo brick

Turbo- 1hr 57 mins- as

usual 20 mins gearing pyramid - small chainring starting heart rate at 60%, find a gear that this works, then do 6 mins like this , 5 mins down one gear, 4 mind down another gear, 3 mins another, 2 mins another - over the course of the 20 mins each time you drop a gear heart rate should increase so by the end you are at 75%- try to keep cadence 90 rpm

into big chainring- 5 x 20 seconds max- 40 easy
                               - 3 x 30 seconds max- 30 easy

the max efforts are exactly that- 110rpm in a gear that has some sort of resistance on it- heart rate is not important on these as long as it doesn't go down- for me it usually shoots up to around 85-90%

2 mins easy to 30 mins

into - 28 mins @75% heart rate- 88-92 rpm- long aerobic effort- keep heart rate within zone and also cadence.
2 mins easy- should be 60 mins now

main set-

4 x 15 mins - as
7 mins @80-85% heart rate- 90 rpm
immediately into- (in same gear or 1 gear harder)
5 x 40 seconds max/ 20 easy
followed by 3 mins easy recovery
after 3 mins easy-repeat 4 time through

On sunday we occasionally put 2 mins in on the 7 mins efforts at 60 rpm- by going into the hardest gear and trying to keep heart rate the same at 85%- we did 3 of these over the 4 lots of 7 mins.

1hr 57 (without the last 3 mins easy as straight into run below)

Run- off the bike , quick change - hard 4 mile loop - push as hard as you can

session worked out for most people around 2hrs 30 mins.

cheers nick

Wirral Junior Aquathon and Salt Ayre Junior Aquathon

Hi all

The first two events of the junior season are nearly here. The Wirral junior aquathlon on March 8th http://www.merseytri.org.uk/events/ and the Salt Ayre Junior Triathlon on March 15th http://www.cityoflancastertriathlon.co.uk/

Both events have shorter distance races for those new to the sport

I will be at both of them

The club have junior tri suits to lend and I will bring them on to Monday night, Friday night and Saturday sessions for the next two weeks. You can borrow one for a £5 returnable deposit, ask at the desk or see me

If you are using a trisuit then you will also need a number belt of which I have a few to lend. Elastic or 'lock laces' are also reccomended. Running shops and Decathlon will sell them.

Any juniors who want to practice transition because they are doing one of these events should bring trainers, small towel and T shirt/race belt to poolside at the swim session and we will organise a practice

There are no entries on the day for these events. Use the links above to enter. Entries for Wirral will close soon, it doesn't say when but it might be tomorrow at midnight

See you Stuart

Turbo set

There is no specific gear to go in in any of the sets I do-as if your cadence is right and your heart rate is right then you are in the right gear, if your cadence is 100 and your heart rate is right but you should be doing 90 cadence then you need to change down a gear and so on ….one of the main problems I find is people don’t have enough resistance on their turbos to achieve the required heart rates and cadences and in turn this lessens the effect of the workout. A good test is to go in your big chainringand find your biggest gear (hardest) and pedal- your legs should slow to at least 65 rpm when pushing if they don’t and you can still cycle freely without the feeling of going uphill then your turbo isn’t on tight/hard enough.

1hr 30 turbo set below (2hrs 30 brick)

20 mins gearing pyramid- small chainring-as

mins easy gear – heart rate upto 60%

mins 1 gear down     - H/R 65%

mins 1 gear down     - H/R 65-70%

mins 1 gear down -    H/R  70%

mins 1 gear down -    H/R  upto 75%

Into big chaining-

10 mins @75 % Heart rate at 100rpm

mins steady- heart rate not below 60%

(32 mins total)

Main set

5 x 10 mins @ 80-85% Heart rate – 90 rpm

mins recovery spinning between each.

This set will get pretty hard after 2-3 but the idea is to hold on to the right cadence and heart rate- This is a good high end aerobic set as there is 50 mins of top end aerobic work – good for 25 mile time trials and equally good building speed for longer races

hr 32 mins

If you are doing this as part of a brick session then straight off into the run

60 mins run

15 mins strong running off the bike (try to run around a 10k pace as though you are exiting transition)

Into 15 mins steadier running at around 75%

5 x 2 mins I PACE (85%)

With 1 min recovery between each

15 mins at 75% bringing down to 60% in the last 5 mins.

Total brick- 2hrs 30 mins
