Juniors 6 minute time trials

We did a time trial on 15th December to see how far athletes could run in 6 minutes. We do this every 3 months. The table shows who did what and if they improved on the previous trial. The spreadsheet can be seen here and will be updated every time we do a trial. Next one will be in March.

NW Senior Championships and Club League events 2015

The 2015 NW duathlon, sprint and standard distance championship races have been announced. The categories are junior (17 to 19), senior (20 to 39), Vet (40 to 49) and Supervet (50+). You must be a TE member to be eligible. There is also a new format club league for TE affiliated clubs. There are 10 events. You must state your club on the entry form but do not need to be a TE member. Each competitor scores points on where they come in their age group. The best three points scores from club members are counted. So for example someone who comes first in Vet 50+ but 60th in the race overall would score just as many points for their club as a younger person who might be first in the 20 to 39 age group category and 1st in the race overall. Our club could do well if we can get 3 members in most races. The list of races and league rules can be seen on the Triathlon England website NW senior series page.

NW Junior Series 2015 announced

The full list of races in the NW series can be seen via the Triathlon England website NW page. There are 20 events. For the first time there is an off road duathlon, an open water aquathlon and a club team relay event. Our own aquathlon at Westhoughton is on Sunday 7th June. Within the series there are also 9 events making up a series for ages 17 to 19 (junior category)

200m kick test

With the winter closing in and there being no triathlons around for the performance of the month award I had an idea, can’t believe I didn’t think about it before! The idea is a “kick club”, with an overall aim of trying to improve everyone’s leg kick over the winter. This is something which everyone can benefit from, not only in terms of speed for their swimming but it will also improve efficiency and body position etc.

Here are the results of the first round of tests. In February we will do the test again and there will be a prize for the fastest overall kick time and the most improved time in terms of percentage improvement. Nick Jackson

VDOT times based on recent time trial

Here are VDOT times and paces based on the last time trial - get familiar with your paces and remember them as we will be using them on the track through the winter! (Also get familiar with the multiples -eg- where you should be at 800 or 1200m etc.. if you are on T/I /R Pace)

These times aren't an exact science, you may have had a bad day on the time trial or be feeling good on another day, but they are usually a good guide to what you can maintain over the distances and effort level. So try to stick to them if you can when running the sets and see how you go and hopefully you will improve to the next VDOT up in time.

Important news about Monday night session

On Monday we had 54 juniors at the Leverhulme Park session and the week before we had well over  40.  We used all the bikes in the container and some children had to 'share' a bike. Numbers have been increasing for a while now as more people find out about the club and children bring their friends. It's good to see but we don't have the required number of coaches, bikes or space. We can't take in more and more children so we need to take some urgent action. Also some of the children attending are not members, don't bring a bike and have not provided a parental consent/emergency contact/medical form. The large number of children also made it difficult for the adult run session

After consultation with the committee we are implementing the following

1. Next week we will inform all juniors/parents at registration that from the following Monday 22nd September the session will be members only. Non members will be given a membership form and a parental consent/emergency contact/medical form to fill in or bring back the following week with a payment of £5 for the remainder of the year's membership. (This is pro rata to the annual membership for juniors of £15 which runs starts on 1st Jan)

2. We urge members to bring their own bike if at all possible. The bikes in the container were intended to be used by new attenders until they got their own bike or their parents got a bike carrier.

3. We will monitor attendance for the next 3 sessions and if numbers continue to be above 40 then we close membership for juniors until the end of the year and start a waiting list. Also we discourage members inviting friends along for the next 3 Mondays while we monitor.

4. We are ending the practice of giving children the first session free of charge

5. Adult and junior coaches will get together to discuss how to run junior and senior sessions safely alongside each other

6. We will discuss the overall issue at the next committee meeting on Tue 30th Sept. The above measures are aimed at managing the issue short term but obviously we will need to come up with some longer term solutions and ultimately we will need more coaches and sessions if we are going to expand so any offers to help are welcome.

Thanks for your co-operation

Juniors come third in NW club championships

22 juniors from Bolton Tri Club were amongst the 250 who took part in the Blackpool Junior Triathlon and NW Club Championships on Sunday. They all gave 100% and we ended up joint third in the boys and fourth in the girls. This was a great result and they all supported each other. Amelia Rose - 1st in Tristart girls, Georgia Heath - 1st in T1 girls, Marcus Dey - 2nd in T3 boys. Sam Atherton, Jonah Harrison and Rhys Whelan stepped up to do their first standard distance races. Sam Brooks did his first triathlon and came fifth in Youth boys. No space to mention everyone although they all deserve a mention but I will do that in Bolton News article next week. Mick Taylor has loads of photos to go on website gallery. Our parents also helped  to marshal the race which was a joint effort with 5 other NW clubs. For full results go to http://www.triathlonengland.org/north-west/juniors/juniors#NW Regional Club Championships

Triathlon season ends. Red Rose X Country season begins. Register before 30th Sept.

Cross country season starts soon. Mud lovers rejoice! There are races for all age groups from under 11s to Vets

We are affiliated to the above league and the fixtures are on their website http://www.redrosecrosscountry.co.uk/fixtures.html. For £5 you get a race number and just turn up to enter as many of the races as you like. To be registered for the league please give your £5 to our registration team at a Monday or Saturday session (or directly to Stuart Carter) before the 30th September and then e-mail chairman@boltontri.com to say you have done so. I will then pick up a race number for you at the league committee meeting on 1st October. If you end up not doing any races we will return your fiver.

If you don't register before the 1st October you can still do races but you will have to enter each race on the day at a cost of £6 a race

It is good training and good fun. First race in Leigh is flat and usually dry but the others have a few hills, stream crossings etc

Fully supported cycling event in Lancs

Hi Mark

We are holding a cycling event in Lancashire next month, and I wondered if any of the members of Bolton Tri would be interested in taking part?

We have a very hilly 100 mile option, which is fully supported with back up vehicles, a mechanic and some lovely cakes baked by the WI!

The event is on 5th October, and more information is available here:

http://www.medequip4kids.org.uk/events/497/lancashire-loop-cycle-challenge.html

There’s no sponsorship required, but the registration fee (£39) will cover the running of the event and also contribute to projects for children’s wards in the north west, including Royal Bolton Neo Natal Unit.

Please could you circulate this among your members and we’d love to see you there!

Thanks

Performance award for July

Apologies for the lateness of this email but the award for July went to IAN MORGAN for his performance at the Bolton Ironman. Ian did receive his hat a while ago it is me who forgot to send the email out!

Ian completed the Bolton ironman in 12hrs 56 minutes in his first ironman and was the first finisher from Bolton tri club in this event- This is a very good achievement and to dip under 13hrs in his first ironman bodes well for the future and knocking more time off that pb.

So well done Ian.

I will email the august award shortly!

Thanks Nick

Intro of waiting list for Sat junior swim session 'improvers'

To all members and in particular our lovely volunteers who do registration at sessions

Introduction of a waiting list for ‘improvers’ group at junior swim session

We are now fortunate to have the problem of having more swimmers than we can teach in the ‘improvers’ lanes at the junior session. We have 3 junior groups, improvers, intermediate and advanced. Rather than take in more and more swimmers and not be able to teach them properly so that they progress we have decided to start up a waiting list. As swimmers move up into the intermediate lanes and make room in the beginners group we will take children off the waiting list. While they are on the waiting list junior members will be offered a place at BMSS Bubbles swim school at a discounted rate. Bubbles swim school is held at Ladybridge Pool on Saturdays 9.30 to 1.30 and is led by Tom McManus the deputy head coach at Bolton Metro Swim Squad. They have various groups from non-swimmers up to ASA level 10. The normal price at Bubbles is £40 for a course of 10 lessons.  For Bolton Tri Club members it will be £32 for 10 lessons and if the member is already paying for their Tri Club training sessions using our direct debit scheme then we will re-imburse them a further £12 on production of their Bubbles receipt making it only £2 a lesson. They can start at any time. See their website http://www.bmssbubbles.co.uk/. Please note that our minimum age for junior membership is 7 and this will still apply.

New junior swimmer who can already meet the standard for progression into the intermediate group or advanced group can start straight away as we can cater for more swimmers in these lanes at the moment. The entry requirement for the intermediate group is to be able to swim 150m front crawl in 3:30 or less and 50 back stroke in 1:20 or less.

From  this Saturday children wanting to come to the swim session for the first time should be advised that there is a waiting list for the beginners group and they will be assessed by one of the coaches to see which group they are suitable for. Just introduce them or their parent to one of the coaching team.

A word of advice

Although we call it the ‘improvers  group’ this does not mean it is a group for non-swimmers. It is a group for those who want to begin to do front crawl (and the other strokes) with the correct technique. It is a lane swim and younger children who still need to learn basic strokes are likely  to achieve quicker and better results by attending  sessions held in a teaching pool or sessions where they swim widths. Our coaches are trained to coach swimming not to teach swimming from scratch.

calling all juniors: NW club champs 21st September

The North West Regional Junior Triathlon Club Championships at Blackpool on 21st September is fast approaching. This is a normal junior triathlon and part of the NW junior series but the first two boys and the first two girls in the Tristart, T1, T2, T3 and Youth standard distance races score points for the club. Last year our boys team came 4th and the girls came 7th. We hope to do just as well if not better this year.

Entries will open on 20th August and close on 15th September via Entry Central. A race information pack with times for each age group race can be accessed via http://www.triathlonengland.org/north-west/juniors/juniors . The link for Entry Central will also appear here in due course. When entering please make sure you enter the club name 'Bolton Triathlon Club' in full. .

On race day results should be available from the chip timing system after each age group has raced. These draft results will be posted in the registration area so teams will have an idea on how they are doing during the day. The final scores will be calculated in the evening and communicated to all clubs the next day.

The winning teams will have their trophies engraved and they will be formally presented to the winning teams at the North West Presentation Evening on 15th November 2014 at the Lancashire Manor
Hotel, Pimbo.

The event is organised jointly by all the NW clubs so we do need to provide some volunteers from our club to help on the day. Let Stuart Carter know if you can help for all or part of the event.

Neil Raby (My Ironman experience 2014)

I have wanted to take part in an Ironman triathlon since seeing it in Bolton in2009 it was then I decided to start my journey into triathlon (5 years ago). I have enjoyed the whole 5 year journey that at times has been hard but always enjoyable. I have met some incredible people along the way and I am part of an incredible triathlon club (Bolton tri-club) who have supported me for the last 3 years to achieve my goal.

The training for the Ironman has been tough but ultimately enjoyable and rewarding with the race itself being something I will never forget, from the registration on Thursday to crossing the finishing line on Sunday evening 14 hours after starting the swim at Pennington flash.

To see all the spectators at the swim and lining the bike route to the incredible crowds all along the run course who gave me an incredible boost and made me feel proud to part of the Bolton family, I will be honest the run part of the race was the hardest thing I have ever had to do but the feeling when finally getting the last lap arm band was amazing. Reaching the finishing chute and realising I am going to run down that red carpet to the finish was the most uplifting 30 sec anybody could experience. When I crossed the finishing line and heard those words “Neil you are an Ironman” I knew that in front of all my family and friends I had achieved the goal I set out to do 5 years ago.

(oh and yes I have signed up to do it all again in 2015)

Neil.

No swim at Smithills for the next 3 weeks

Swim at Smithills is not taking place for the next 3 weeks and it will start up again on 27th August. A suitable coach to replace Tom McManus is being sought. Tom has moved south to take up another job.

For these three weeks, starting tonight, you can go to the triclub session which is on 7-8pm at ladybridge pool. Full details including map at www.boltontri.com. (Ignore the bit about swimmer competence: there will be coaches available for all standards for the next three weeks )

Sorry for any inconvenience but due to miscommunication /misunderstanding the closure has only just come to light.

VO2 Blog site and the Bolton Triathlon Club

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blog
It’s always great for us to see that our products help people get actively involved with fitness, especially when there’s a little competition involved. There’s nothing better than a dash of rivalry to get the blood pumping.
However, there’s something truly uplifting about seeing younger competitors taking part in these competitions. We’re proud to encourage junior competitors on their journey to being champions. Every step is important to us.
That’s why we’re delighted that junior members of our local Bolton Triathlon Club are proudly donning our custom triathlon kits, both in training and on the race trail.

Outward Ventures

The first event in the subsequent string took place back in June, with the Junior Triathlon that went ahead in Blackpool on Tuesday 3rd. The competition kicked off at the Palatine Leisure Centre where the opening swim was held, before candidates took to an off-road cycling track and finishing with a challenging open-road run to the finish line.
The event had a fantastic turnout, with over 180 juniors taking part in total. The teams came from all across the north-west, including – you guessed it – the Bolton Tri Club.
Notable successes on the day included 8-year-old Amelia Rose, who powered through with a truly admirable effort that saw her blazing through her race to finish in second place. Also name worth mentioning is Adam Akik, who valiantly came in fourth place in the T2 division.
There was also the Wirral Junior Triathlon on June 29th that a number of Bolton Tri Club girls took part in, an event hosted by Mersey Tri. Bolton Tri were represented by girls in T1, 2 and 3, who we’re proud to say chose VO2 triathlon gear to aid their impressive performances.

Closer to Home

That’s not all. Sunday June 8th saw a great turnout for the BTC Junior Aquathon, which commenced at noon with a swim at the Westhoughton Community Leisure Centre, on Bolton Road.
The race was a huge success, with loads of youngsters getting involved and encouraging others to get active. The juniors proved once and for all that triathletes can have fun while they compete, inspiring not just their peers but also parents were compelled to up their game and incorporate the active lifestyle into their daily routine.
It was great to see our advocates take part in an event so close to home. We love seeing the athletic community continue to grow in our home town on varying levels. Events like the Ironman UK race are fantastic for bringing attention to the area, but it’s the clubs like Bolton Tri that are responsible for more long-term growth in our younger athletes by nurturing potential to see them truly flourish.

Swim session changes

Bolton One Thurday swim session 8 to 9pm is ending on Thu 31st July

New swim session to replace it starting at Ladybridge Wed 6th August 7 to 8pm

Hi all

Bolton One are insisting that we can only have 3 lanes from end of July. In addition any discounts we have had from them will no longer be available so it will cost £20 per lane per hour. We have managed to break even until now but only because we had some discount periods when they did not charge us at all or gave us 4 lanes for the price of 3. As a result the committee have decided to replace this session with one at Ladybridge pool where we can have the whole pool for £38 including the lifeguard. The pool is 4 lanes.

http://www.swimming.org/poolfinder/pools/1002529/bolton/ladybridge-leisure-centre?back=%7C122%7C Postcode is BL3 4LG.

The session will be coached by Faye or Nick Jackson as usual and be suitable for the same level of swimmers who attend Bolton One (those who do Ian’s sessions on a Saturday).

Next year we propose to include this session in the direct debit scheme. We might have to increase direct debits slightly. Until then it will be £3 a session.

The Wed night session at Smithills 8 to 9pm will continue and this is suitable for all levels of swimmers who want to focus on technique and stroke improvement

Extra junior swim session

We are also going to consider having an extra midweek junior session if we can get a suitable time  and venue and coaches are available. Please reply if your child would be interested in attending a midweek session.

Help needed with registration desk on Monday nights

With regard to the Levehulme Park session we could do with a rota of volunteers to help Karen at the registration desk.  She is finding it impossible to take all the money and deal with all the enquiries and questions at the same time. We need an extra person to introduce newcomers to coaches and and explain things to them

Let me know  if you can help

Leadership in Running Fitness

Hi all

this would be a good course for anyone who is interested in helping with adult run coaching  on Mondays as we need more than one group now. Club will pay if candidate helps lead some running on Mondays (regular but not necessarily every week)

Any takers? More info on what the course involves can be seen by following this link.

Many thanks Richard Farron

It was my Sons first ever Aquathon event at the weekend and we were both a little apprehensive.
Please can you pass on our thanks on to all involved for a fantastic day.
Brilliantly organised, helpful marshals who also did a great job keeping people on the right side of the running track, loads of kids enjoying themselves.  Well done to all involved!!

To Bolton Tri Club

Many, many thanks for an amazing aquathlon today. It was extremely well organised and efficient. There was a lovely atmosphere and what a great day out. We have three daughters who all took part at different levels and all of them came away with a real sense of achievement.
Thanks again for a super day.
The Miller Family

My daughter, Mia Rigby, competed in the super sprint race today- it was her first race and she did really well and really enjoyed it.

Mia runs at Chorley AC and has just started Tri.

I am emailing you to express how impressed I was with the slickness of the event, how well organised it was and to acknowledge how much time and effort must have gone into sorting race numbers, goodie bags and results. It was impressive.
Thank you to you and your club for giving my daughter a great sporting experience.

Kind regards   Alison Rigby
