BTC training sessions and how to book them.

First of all you need to be a BTC member to book a session and you can join via this link bookitzone . For bookitzone you need to create an account/register but this takes 2 minutes

If you are interested in joining but want to try a session first please contact chairman@boltontri.com or a committee member and we will book you in for an introductory session. After that you will need to join to attend further sessions

We now use a system called ClubSpark for session booking. This requires payment on booking. The link is below. Please save it to your favourites.  Each session comes up for booking 7 days in advance.

How to register
The first time you use it you will need to register via the red register button at top right corner of page. If you are not a tri club member but you just want to book sessions for your child who is a member then register in your name and use your dob. Once you have registered, created a password and are signed in click on the training tab on the top menu. Go to the session you want to book. It will ask if you want to book yourself in or there is an option to 'add athlete' . If you are booking your child then use the add athlete option. You will have to enter their dob and other details but you won't have to do this every time. Please enter an e-mail address for the booking confirmation and an emergency contact number for them. After first booking it will keep their details

Please note that bookitzone and ClubSpark are separate systems so you will need to register on both.

If you are or have been a British Triathlon member ClubSpark may recognize your e-mail and ask you to register/sign in using your British Triathlon account. Please note being a Bolton Tri Club member is not the same as being a British Triathlon member.  Let us know if you have problems and we might be able to help you. You can also contact membership@britishtriathlon.org who are usually very helpful. There is a forgotten password option on the ClubSpark log in page

Paula's plank and wall sit challenge

A challenge for you all! The 90 second wall squat and plank challenge. Wall squat first then straight into the plank. See if you can build up to doing it everyday. The wall squat will help strengthen the legs and the plank will strengthen the core. It’s tough ! My legs were shaking after 90 seconds ! If you need to, build it up from 30 seconds, then 60 seconds then 90 seconds ! And if you want finish with a headstand ! Ha !

Craig's Strength and Conditioning Challenge

So a bit of a S&C challenge to keep everyone occupied, as we are triathletes we do things in 3's so... 30 pressups, 30 air squats and 3mins Plank. This can be split up in to however many sets you need to complete the 30 reps/3 mins so in my case it was 3x10 pressups, 30 air squats and 3x1min plank. Try to fit this in when you can, every day or whenever it fits in to your training plans. Let us know how you get on on facebook and try to progress this month to get to one set of each exercise. Good Luck
BTW Lynne added 30 lunges to the challenge and the plank can be split into 1min on front. 1min L side, 1min R side

BTC Salt Ayre Junior Duathlon 2020 and BTC Go-Tri Duathlon for adults both postponed till later in the yearor entries

Bolton Tri Club are running a junior duathlon and a Go-Tri short distance duathlon for adults at Salt Ayre Sports Centre in Lancaster which was to be on Sunday 5th April 1 to 4pm. A new date will be arranged once the corona virus pandemic is over and sport is allowed again. The junior races will start at 1pm and the adult event will start between 3 and 3.30pm. The cycle is in a tarmac off road cycle track and the run is on the athletics track next door. However the Youth and Junior and Go-Tri events will use a run course on the cycle path alongside the River Lune  and then finish on the athletics track.

Entry for the junior events and more information about the distances and age categories go to

For information and entry for the Go-Tri duathlon for adults go to

Please note we only take entries on-line and there are no entries on the day. The closing date for entries is 31st March.

We hope to get as many of our juniors as possible taking part. There is a shorter distance race for 11 to 16 year olds who don't want to do their age group category distances which are longer. The Go-Tri event for adults is  good for newcomers and parents who want to give it a go and good training for more experienced triathletes. r

Look forward to seeing your entries

BTC New Year 5k and 2.5k

We would also like to thank everyone who took part whether you were running, marshaling, bringing cakes and raffle prizes or just cheering on the runners. We were expecting no more than 100 runners but 170 of you turned up ! So apologies for not having enough medals and race numbers and for the organised chaos at the finish and the start. Since there was no on-line entry and timing was done by hand it is going to take me some time to enter all the names, numbers and times on to a spreadsheet but it will be done in a week or so. I know we will have missed some people out. Anyway the main thing was everyone enjoyed themselves and went home with a sense of achievement, lots of children did it and we raised £715 for Bury Hospice.😀😀

Monday night junior sessions

We have now been allowed back on the track for cycling and running.
We have reverted to the session times we had before the track closure. Younger group 7 to 8.10pm and older group 7.30 to 8.45pm. If any of the older group want to they can join in strength and conditioning with Jim between 7 and 7.30 providing they are going to take it seriously.
Line painting has been postponed till 2020 and is dependent on weather conditions. There is no set date as yet but  when it does happen the track will be closed for 2 weeks.
We have been asked by the council to comply with the following guidance.
'One of the biggest differences that users will see with the new surface is that water drains through it and away, rather than lying on the surface. To ensure that the pores in the surface continue to operate effectively it is important that dirt does not get onto the track to block them. It is therefore essential that any footwear or equipment (bike wheels etc) to be used on the track is clean before use.
The other factor to prolonging the life of the track is to even out the wear as much as possible. To this end we would ask that athletes do not use the inside 2 lanes unless essential for the training/ competition taking place.'
So please ensure your bikes and trainers are free of mud and dirt before you come and we will be doing some checks. If a bike is too dirty you won't be allowed to use it for the session. We will mark off the inside 4 lanes and if the training activity does not need accurate distances then run outside the markers and follow your  coach's instructions. The younger group will use the outside 4 lanes for cycling between 7 and 7.30 so warm up running should be done on inside lanes up to 7.30.. The older group will do a cycle session from 8.15 to 8.45 when all running has finished.
Wednesday run session will be back again from Wed 8th January 2020  All abilities catered for. The regular coaches will be Ann Butler and George Butler. Older juniors welcome too. £3 for this session unless you pay by standing order.

Critical Swim Speed Training at Farnworth senior session

the results from 12th January Saturday senior swim session are attached

We did 200m and then 400m later in the session. These times have been used to work out your critical swim speed per 100m. This corresponds to lactate threshold pace i.e. swim faster than this and you start to go into your anaerobic zone building up lactic acid and being unable to sustain the pace

For those who missed it we will be repeating the tests on 16th Feb or or you can time yourself and send me your times. The Critical Swim Speeds will be used to allocate swimmers to lanes and to determine your interval times for main sets.

For triathlon where we swim long distances it is your aerobic capacity (and technique) that will determine how fast you can complete a 400m, 750m or 1500m swim. The most efficient way to improve your aerobic capacity is to work at lactate threshold pace or just below i.e. sustained speed with short recoveries. The CSS pace may seem comfortable at the start of a 1200 or 1500 main set but it is a challenge to keep the pace up as the set goes on with only short recoveries.

Go to the Swim Smooth website if you want to know more about this http://www.swimsmooth.com/training.html#ixzz53IYGojZL. Here you will also find advice on designing your own sessions based on your 100m CSS. Basically you do 100m repeats on 100m CSS +10secs or 200m repeats on 2 x 100m CSS + 20secs or 300 repeats on 3 x 100m CSS +30secs or 400m repeats on 4 x 100m CSS +40secs. It is important not to take longer rests than this otherwise your heart rate drops and you lose the training effect.

We will repeat the tests on  16th Feb so you can see the improvement in your CSS pace from training in this way. Mind you - you will have to train and swim at least once a week, and preferably more often

Stuart

BTC 2019 Club Grand Prix and Club Championship Races

We are running a club Grand Prix again in 2019. The aim of the Grand Prix to encourage members to do events with their club mates and to encourage a bit of friendly competition within the club. The committee have taken into account all feedback received and selected the following events for 2019. We have focused on local sprint and standard distance triathlons but have also included a middle distance; a couple of duathlons; and an aquabike (swim/bike). Most events get booked up well beforehand so get planning. Men and women will be scored separately

The scoring system will be as in previous years, 50 points for first club finisher, 45 for second, 40 for third, 39 for fourth, 38 for fifth, 37 for sixth and so on plus points for age group finish position in the whole race. If you finish 1st in your triathlon age group you get 40 - 1 = 39 points. If you finish 2nd in your age group you get 40 -2 = 38 points and so on. If you are 40th or below in age group you get 1 point. Triathlon age groups are in 5 year bands For each member their 5 best scores from events will count. This scoring system deliberately favours participation, the more events you compete in the better chance you have of winning.
